Louisiana roots, offshore curiosity

Most of the crew grew up on Louisiana water. Joey Maciasz trout-fished and duck-hunted the coast out of Baton Rouge before going offshore for good; now he lives for yellowfin and grouper. Sam Leyrer, from Central, has spent more than 20 years running charter and commercial trips across the Gulf, from speckled trout to swordfish.

Experience along more than one coast

Evan “Poppa” Hileman grew up in New Orleans fishing Fourchon and Venice, and years working Gulf oil rigs taught him where the fish live. Hayden Kammel came from Charleston, South Carolina, after commercial bottom-fishing and trolling on the Atlantic, and says the Gulf’s variety is the best part of the job.

The patience to teach a cast

Ivan Perrin spent decades guiding fly anglers on rivers near Aspen and the lower Colorado, and Luke Lowery learned his trade on the trout water around Steamboat Springs. Now they teach on the marsh, alongside Owen Belknap. Whether it’s your first saltwater fly trip or you’re after a bull red on the flats, they’ll put you in position, help you read the fish and tighten up your cast. Ivan also runs the DTB Salt Water Fly Fishing School each December.
